renversement
Reversal

History of the image

I had stopped there to photograph a Great Blue Heron. It was perched in front of this small house, which I had already photographed in another setting. The scene seemed obvious. But my lack of discretion during the approach did not go unnoticed. The bird flew away, taking with it what I thought was the subject of the image.

And yet, instead of leaving a void, his departure opened something else up. What I hadn't immediately seen appeared. The marsh became a mirror, and in that mirror, the landscape began to transform. Forms dissolved. Lines softened. The reflection resembled a painting, almost impressionistic, where reality lost its rigidity. It was at this precise moment that photography shifted.

In post-production, I chose to invert the image. As if the reflection became reality, and reality, in turn, was nothing more than a reflection of another kind. This gesture is not a device; it is an invitation. An invitation to look differently. To no longer seek to identify, but to feel. Sharpness, structure, and documentary precision then recede into the background. They give way to imagination, poetry, and a form of visual freedom. The world is no longer simply what it is, but what it suggests.

This image was born from an apparent failure. But sometimes, what we miss opens up a space much wider than what we thought we were looking for.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0992/6505/2997/files/Renversement_F_e48b57b6-3187-428c-a4e8-46952ee3d0d9.jpg?v=1769027629
