The marsh bottom is shallow. The boat rests below, almost entirely submerged. Yet, its end breaks the surface. It is there, visible, present, while already belonging to that which is disappearing. It is this tension that gave the image its title: \u003ci\u003eSurface in Abyss\u003c\/i\u003e .\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e Observing this scene, I thought of what Edgar Morin called dialogical thinking. This idea that two seemingly contradictory notions can coexist without canceling each other out. To be in the abyss, and yet on the surface. To be engulfed, while remaining visible. To be both here and already elsewhere. This boat doesn't fit into our simple categories. It is neither fully present nor fully absent. Neither saved nor completely lost. It occupies an uncomfortable, yet profoundly real, in-between space. And it is precisely there that something is at stake.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eThe deliberately minimalist black and white treatment accentuates this ambiguity. The subject matter is simplified, reference points disappear, the image verges on abstraction. What remains is not a boat, but a situation. This photograph does not seek to illustrate an idea. It creates tension within it. It reminds us that reality is always more complex than our oppositions. That it cannot be confined to binary categories.
